Artist Statement
This set of works for the Son of a Serendipitous Glitch assignment is, at its essence, a paradox. The whole assignment is a contradiction. I have a lot of angst about AI and the increasingly large role it plays in our lives. Because of that, I struggled with the idea of using AI as the medium for this assignment. It felt contradictory to participate in a technology that I have so many concerns about. Ultimately, I realized that the only way I could engage with the assignment honestly was to use it as an opportunity to critique the
technology itself.
The way I interpreted the “glitch” aspect of the assignment was not only through visual disruption but also by having the technology question its own existence and consequences. The glitch became a disruption in the expected relationship between the user and the technology.
My work explores the environmental impact of AI, its growing presence in creative fields, and the possibility that our dependence on it could change how we think, create, and interact with the world around us.
These pieces are not meant to provide a simple answer about whether AI is good or bad. Instead, they are an expression of my frustration, uncertainty, and anxiety toward a technology developing faster than I feel we can fully understand. I use the “black pill” motif because it sometimes feels like we have no say in how this technology becomes a part of our lives. We are forced to surrender because the red and blue pills aren’t even visibly available to us.

Red Pill Blue Pill Black Pill

-
🔴 Red Pill — The Truth: See what AI actually is and what it is doing.
You confront the uncomfortable realities: automation, surveillance, misinformation, job displacement, environmental costs, etc. -
🔵 Blue Pill — The Illusion: Believe AI is harmless, inevitable, or purely beneficial.
You remain comfortable within the existing narrative and don't question what AI is changing. -
⚫ Black Pill — The Surrender: Recognize the consequences of AI but believe there is nothing you can do about them.
The person sees the problem but becomes fatalistic: “AI is coming. Humans have already lost. Resistance is pointless.”
